Depression affects around five percent of the global population. There are different types of depressive disorders, and depression symptoms can range in severity. Getting treatment for depression can help. Depression and Substance Abuse

There is a strong connection between depression and substance abuse, and people with mental health conditions like depression can be more likely to develop substance use disorders. There’s more than one possible reason for this crossover. First, depression and substance abuse share many of the same risk factors, such as having been through a traumatic event. Additionally, people with any depressive disorder may turn to substances to self-medicate. However, drugs and alcohol are also known to worsen mental health and lead to brain changes with long-term use.

If you have both a mental health condition like depression and a substance addiction, it is ideal that they are treated at the same time. This is called dual-diagnosis treatment. In research, dual-diagnosis treatment is continually linked to improved treatment outcomes for those facing substance abuse and other mental health concerns. For example, dual-diagnosis treatment can lead to better psychiatric functioning and quality of life.

Levels of Care at East Coast Recovery

East Coast Recovery is an outpatient-only drug and alcohol rehab center. Here are the programs or levels of care at East Coast Recovery. Before you start treatment, we will discuss your treatment options with you and help you choose the right starting level of care.

Day Treatment

Our day treatment provides intensive treatment during the day but lets you return home or to sober living* at night rather than living on-site. Clients in day treatment at East Coast Recovery spend about six hours per day in treatment, including lunch, Monday through Friday. This level of care provides more structure than other outpatient programs, consisting of individual therapy sessions, groups and group therapy sessions, and other scheduled activities, like listening to guest speakers and bi-weekly family therapy.

*We can provide referrals to sober living and other resources as needed.

Partial Day Treatment

Our partial day treatment is one step down from day treatment in intensity. Rather than attend treatment for six hours per day, partial day treatment clients engage in about 10-12 hours of treatment activities total per week. Some clients at East Coast Recovery start with this level of care when they first enter treatment, but others step down to partial day treatment after finishing a day treatment program..

Aftercare Plans for Substance Abuse

One of the things that sets East Coast Recovery apart is our approach to aftercare plans for substance abuse and dual-diagnosis concerns. Our aftercare program in Massachusetts takes your continued recovery seriously, helping you stay connected to a sober community and support system once treatment is over while remaining accountable for your sobriety.

Signs and Symptoms of Depression

Depression can provoke a wide range of mental and physical symptoms that differ from person to person. You do not need to experience every possible symptom of depression to meet the criteria for a depressive disorder or to be in a depressive episode. That said, here are some common signs and symptoms of depression to look out for.

  • A down, low, or depressed mood.
  • Excessive crying or emotional numbness.
  • Diminished ability to focus and think (or indecisiveness).
  • Sleep disturbance, including insomnia (trouble sleeping) or hypersomnia (sleeping too much).
  • Angry outbursts, irritability, or being more easily frustrated than usual.
  • Feelings of emptiness, worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness.
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you typically enjoy.
  • Social isolation or withdrawal.
  • Slowed body movements.
  • Changes in appetite.
  • Thoughts of suicide.
  • Fatigue.

The way you experience depression may depend on the type of depressive disorder you meet the criteria for–major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most frequently talked about types of depression, but some people may have persistent depressive disorder (PDD), premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), or another type of depression. We provide evaluations for incoming clients, which will help us understand what you’re going through and how to help.
