Is There Medication for Cocaine Addiction?

Studies have sought new medication for cocaine addiction, owing to the rise in cocaine dependence across the United States.

At present, there is no FDA-approved medication to directly help with cocaine addiction directly. This means that there is no medication you can take to help you stop using cocaine or to reduce your risk of relapse. The reason for this is that no medication has yet to prove reliably effective.

As more research has focused on the neurobiology of cocaine addiction, controlled clinical trials have evaluated things like propranolol to help with immediate abstinence, blocking the euphoria of cocaine and therefore increasing the likelihood that someone in recovery could get through the cravings.

Other research has evaluated medicines along the same lines as a way to prevent relapse. These include:

  • Baclofen
  • Tiagabine
  • Topiramate
  • Modafinil
  • Disulfiram

While development is ongoing, at present, facilities like ours can offer a range of medications to help with secondary issues that contribute to or exacerbate cocaine addiction.

Secondary Medication for Cocaine Addiction

With East Coast Recovery, what started as sober living has transitioned into outpatient treatment with the goal of providing affordable, high-quality treatment. As part of that treatment, our team offers different modalities to fit unique recovery needs.

People who struggle with addiction often have underlying mental health disorders or trauma, and the symptoms of these can interfere with successful recovery. That is where medication can help.

At our outpatient facility, we can work with your care team to provide medication for cocaine addiction that treats symptoms like depression or anxiety so that you don’t have thoughts of hopelessness or panic attacks interfering with your ability to focus on treatment.

Our clients are exposed to various treatment programs so they can find what connects best to them and their needs, and that can mean trying different medications to help control feelings of anxiety or over-the-counter medication to help with things like headaches and sleep.

East Coast Recovery Treatment for Cocaine Addiction

At East Coast Recovery, our cocaine treatment programs emphasize psychotherapy and similar therapeutic modalities. Where appropriate, medication can be incorporated.

In addition, we offer unique features like:

  • Fridays group talking sessions on the beach, near the facility
  • Cookouts in our outdoor space
  • Attendance at local community events

Owing to the nature of our outpatient program, we even provide services like evening transportation to take clients to meetings.

FAQ

Is There Medication for Cocaine Addiction?

Currently, there are no medications approved by the FDA for cocaine addiction, but treatment can still include medication for secondary concerns like depression or anxiety.

What Medications Are Used for Addiction?

If you have an addiction to more than one substance, like cocaine and opioids, then your treatment plan might include medication for the opioid addiction. However, if you are dealing with mental health conditions like anxiety disorders, medication for anxiety treatment might be part of your care plan. When you speak to our care team, we can help you learn more.

What If I Have Addiction to Cocaine and Other Things?

No matter the severity of your addiction or the number of substances to which you have an addiction, you can find treatment. Our facility specializes in flexible outpatient programs so that you can work in and around other obligations while still getting the level of care that you need.
If you don’t require 24-hour supervision, we can work with you to find the right type of outpatient program that gives therapy and, where appropriate, medication to help with addiction to cocaine and any other substances.

Do I Need Medication Management?

We offer what is called “medication management” as part of our treatment options. This is a form of care where you work with our team to regularly review your medication needs, how effective medications are, and what symptoms you might still be experiencing compared to what side effects you are experiencing. The purpose of medication management is generally for situations with co-occurring disorders where you are struggling with cocaine addiction and something like PTSD, anxiety, or depression, and we need to work with you to find the right medication to manage your symptoms.

How is Cocaine Treated?

With East Coast Recovery, we offer flexible outpatient programs featuring a range of therapeutic modalities. That means our clients can choose from a range of therapies to find the ones they like best or the ones most suited to their needs.
This can include things like cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, yoga, nutritional counseling, art therapy, relapse prevention, and mindfulness meditation. Many of these modalities take the form of group therapy sessions but can also take the form of 12-step support groups and individual therapy.

What is a Day Program?

At East Coast Recovery, we offer what are called Day Programs. These provide intensive care in an outpatient setting, allowing you to return home at the end of each day. The treatment program includes a combination of things like medical supervision, group therapy, and individual counseling.

Is a Day Program or Partial Day Program Better for Cocaine Addiction?

Our Day Program is designed for people who need more support than a Partial Day program but less support than a 24-hour form of residential care. Our Partial Day Programs provide between 10 and 12 hours of weekly treatment, ideal for those who are transitioning back to normal life but still need support.
The one that works best for you for cocaine addiction will be the one with the most appropriate level of care based on your needs. When you call our team, we can help you review your current situation and make a recommendation from there.
