Bipolar disorder is a common mood disorder said to affect around 2.8 percent of adults in the United States per year. Like other mental health conditions, living with bipolar disorder can put you at an elevated risk of substance abuse. If you’re looking for addiction and bipolar disorder treatment in Boston, you’re in the right place. We’re here to help you get the care you need and deserve.
East Coast Recovery accepts most forms of insurance. Scholarships or additional payment options are available for those who need them. Please call (617) 744-7373 to verify your insurance benefits for bipolar disorder treatment in Boston at East Coast Recovery, commitment-free.
There is a substantial connection between bipolar disorder and addiction. An estimated 56 percent of people with bipolar disorder will meet the criteria for a substance use disorder at some point in their life. When bipolar disorder and addiction go together, individuals face obstacles such as:
Addressing bipolar disorder and addiction at the same time is strongly recommended and can improve treatment outcomes for people living with both conditions. This is called dual diagnosis or integrated treatment.
Dual-diagnosis treatment is associated with positive outcomes such as improved quality of life, reduced or diminished substance abuse, increased employment rates, and better psychiatric functioning for people facing addiction and co-occurring disorders. Our dual-diagnosis treatment center in Massachusetts addresses bipolar disorder and other conditions that may co-occur with substance abuse from a compassionate, trauma-informed, and whole-person perspective.Â
All clients at East Coast Recovery get an individualized treatment plan. If you are a client experiencing bipolar disorder and addiction, yours will include a tailored blend of effective therapies for the conditions and concerns you experience. For example:
We also offer medication management and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) alongside other methods, strategies, and approaches. The East Coast Recovery team is here to help you find a sustainable approach to mental health management and addiction recovery that works for you.
At East Coast Recovery, all of our programs operate on an outpatient basis. Here are the levels of care you or your loved one looking for addiction and bipolar disorder treatment in Boston may benefit from at our center. The East Coast Recovery team will help you decide on the right program or starting level of care during the intake process.
Our day treatment provides the most intensive treatment for addiction and co-occurring concerns possible in an outpatient setting. This program meets daily throughout the week for about six hours each day. You will participate in a combination of groups, individual therapy sessions, and other activities catered to your unique needs in our day treatment for addiction and bipolar disorder. This program provides immersive treatment while allowing clients to live at home or otherwise offsite (e.g., in sober living*) and is a common starting level of care at our center.
*We provide referrals to sober living and other resources as needed.
Our partial day treatment in Boston meets for a total of about 10-12 hours per week. Clients participating in partial day treatment who are experiencing bipolar disorder and substance abuse will engage in a custom blend of therapies for addiction and mental health, similar to day treatment clients. However, partial day treatment is significantly more flexible than day treatment. You can start treatment in a partial day treatment program or step down to this level of care after completing day treatment.
Aftercare plans for substance abuse and dual-diagnosis clients are crucial. East Coast Recovery will help you or your loved one seeking addiction and bipolar disorder treatment for long-term success through the aftercare planning process. We also have an alumni program that lets you stay connected to a supportive sober community and remain accountable after treatment.
Getting to know the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder can be beneficial for those who have a new Bipolar disorder diagnosis, suspect they have Bipolar disorder, or want to better understand a loved one with the condition. Bipolar disorder is characterized by alternating episodes of mania or hypomania (highs) and depression (lows).Â
During a manic episode, you may notice symptoms such as:
Some people are enthusiastic, intensely driven, and eager during manic episodes. Others experience increased irritability, anger, or psychosis. People with Bipolar I disorder must have experienced at least one full-blown manic episode. Those with Bipolar II disorder experience a lower-level form of mania called hypomania but will not experience a full-blown manic episode.Â
If you have any form of bipolar disorder, you will have depressive episodes that could be severe. Depressive episodes are typically marked by symptoms such as:
Living a healthy life with bipolar disorder is entirely possible. Getting off of substances and discovering other ways to meet your needs can be a significant part of managing bipolar disorder more effectively.Â
