Sober Living
Massachusetts

Summary: This article explains the sober living options offered by East Coast Recovery and how they can support rehab.

Sober living homes offer a vital bridge between clinical treatment and real-world independence. Rebuilding your life during or after our full or partial day program requires a supportive environment where your recovery always comes first. Not everyone who comes to East Coast Recovery has that which is why we partner with many opportunities for sober living Massachusetts based.

Let’s talk about the overall benefits of sober living for people in addiction recovery first. Then, we’ll talk about how our sober living partners uniquely support clients getting treatment at our facility and the drug and alcohol rehab programs available to sober living clients with East Coast Recovery.

Why Sober Living is Crucial During Outpatient Care

At East Coast Recovery, we offer two main levels of care: Our full day program or Partial Hospitalization Program (Day Treatment Program) and our partial day program or Intensive Outpatient Program (Partial Day Treatment Program). With either of these, clients come to our facility to actively build new recovery skills, often for several hours each day.

However, even with our full day program, clients only spend upwards of 6 hours on average with our clinical team meaning the rest of the day is spent at home. For those clients who don’t necessarily have a supportive home environment, the skills acquired during things like individual and group therapy might not be retained as well as someone living in a supportive sober home.

It is important to remember that the hours spent outside our clinic are just as critical to success as those spent within our clinic.

During one of our outpatient programs, clients can benefit from staying in a sober living Massachusetts facility in many ways:

A Safe, Supportive Environment

Returning to an environment filled with old triggers, stress, or active substance use can derail early recovery. That is why we help our clients who don’t have a supportive home environment find an alternative. Sober living in the nearby area provides an immediate, substance-free sanctuary.

Built-in Accountability

The sober living homes with which we partner utilize structured rules, curfew guidelines, and regular, random drug screenings. All of these rules and screenings help clients maintain accountability and structure to reinforce the goals and behaviors acquired through therapy.

Peer Solidarity

Many clients find that the early stages of an outpatient program can be a challenge because they feel lonely, no longer connected to a community or a group of friends with whom they once associated.

By choosing to get sober, individuals often have to find a new group of friends so a sober living facility can provide a place to build a shared community, a network of peers who understand the importance of maintaining sobriety and more importantly, can truly understand the challenges associated with those early stages.

Why Sober Living is Essential After Outpatient Care

Some of our clients need additional support after they complete a program with us. At East Coast Recovery, we know that completing an outpatient program is a massive milestone, but the transition back to total independence can feel abrupt.

For those who may not be ready to immediately go back to their everyday environment full of potential triggers and reminders of their past, sober living facilities can create that bridge. The facilities with which we partner can prevent clients from feeling overwhelmed when they first transition after successfully graduating an outpatient program. These facilities are part of our aftercare resources, a chance for clients to:

Build Independence

For many of our clients, completing one of our outpatient programs means they can transition to rebuilding their family relationships, going back to school or work full time, but it’s still important to maintain a routine and sobriety goals during that transition. For some of our clients sober living can be an essential way to achieve that structured routine after outpatient care.

Practice Life Skills

At East Coast Recovery our programs include full day and partial day opportunities that are designed as outpatient programs. This means our clients can return home at the end of their sessions to practice skills in real time.

However, that practice doesn’t end after an outpatient program reaches its conclusion. Sober living homes provide a place for clients who have left our facility to continue building basic life skills like cooking, budgeting, cleaning, and attending local support groups. All of these opportunities move clients closer to independent living.

Cultivate a Safety Net

Long after clinical therapy ends, clients still need a support structure and that’s where the friendships, peer support, and house managers in a sober living environment can play a critical role. This is where clients have an opportunity to build that safety net of encouragement especially in the early stages after completing outpatient treatment, where the risk of relapse is highest.

Day Treatment

The Day Treatment at East Coast Recovery provides a full daily treatment schedule to immerse clients in the healing process. Day Treatment is a commonly recommended starting level of care, and it can act as an alternative to traditional inpatient treatment for clients who are able to manage symptoms outside of treatment hours. Our Day Treatment clients participate in therapy and other treatment activities daily for six hours per treatment day. We offer creative therapies, motivational therapies, behavioral therapies, family therapy sessions, trauma therapy, psychiatry, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), psychoeducation, and a broad spectrum of other treatments. Clients in all of our programs, including Day Treatment, get a personalized treatment plan.

The Partial Day Treatment at East Coast Recovery has a lower time commitment than our Day Treatment program. Partial Day clients attend treatment at East Coast Recovery three days per week for about three hours on each treatment day for groups, individual therapy, and other treatment activities. This schedule gives clients more time for other responsibilities, like work or college classes.

Evening program is similar to our traditional Partial Day program in the sense that it has a lower time commitment than Day Treatment. However, sessions are held in the evening rather than during the day. If you have a full-time work schedule, evening programs would allow you to work during the day, attend therapy at night, and return to sober living at the end of the day.

Before you leave treatment and move out of our sober living home, we’ll help you make a custom aftercare plan. What your aftercare plan looks like will depend on your personal needs. For example, it may include ongoing therapy, medication for addiction and mental health, support groups, job and education planning, or something else. We also have an alumni program for former clients. After finishing treatment at East Coast Recovery, you’ll have instant access to our alumni groups, meetings, check-in calls, and more.
